Is there an ideal age to have wisdom teeth removed?
When indicated, the ideal time for extraction of wisdom teeth is between the ages of 15 and 25. Surgery is easier between these ages because the roots are not fully formed. As well, recovery is quicker and complications are uncommon.
Often wisdom teeth will be extracted before, during or even after an orthodontic treatment. It is believed that the pressure caused by the erupting wisdom teeth (when the eruption is blocked) may throw the other teeth out of alignment. This can also cause pain in the articulation of the jaw (temporomandibular joint)..
When wisdom teeth start pushing through the gums, the neighbouring tooth is at greater risk for cavities and deterioration (resorption).
A deep pocket between the second and third molar (wisdom tooth) may form and food will become trapped leading to inflammation and infection. If left untreated, this infection can result in an abscess formation and spread into the tissues of the neck..
If such complications occur, Dr. Riendeau or Dr. Bonin should be consulted.
